March 2 – April 9, 2005
Opening: Tuesday, March 1st, 5:30 – 8 p.m
From March 2 to April 9 the Leonard & Bina Ellen Art Gallery
presents Tracking the Traces. This exhibition of contemporary
art draws attention to the act of listening. It focuses
on the documentation, transmission, flow, and evocation of
sound.
Tracking the Traces brings together diverse works in the forms
they take and the mediums they employ: kinetic installation,
video, sound installation, collections of artifacts, works
on compact-disc, and live performance. As a whole, this project
reflects upon the trace or traces that sound leaves within
us and around us, anchoring singular presences and experiences.
It unites the work of Jean-Pierre Gauthier (Canada), Friedrich
Jürgenson (Sweden), Ian Murray (Canada), Dominique Petitgand
(France), Lynn Pook (France), Péter Sülyi (Hungary),
and Martin Tétreault (Canada).
Tracking the Traces is curated by Nicole Gingras, the Visiting
Curator of Contemporary Art at the Leonard & Bina Ellen
Art Gallery for 2005 and 2006. This exhibition is the initial
part of a project that will continue in the spring of 2006.
A publication on the issues addressed in this project will
be launched at this later date.
SPECIAL EVENT: 3 SOLOS. Three artists from Tracking
the Traces will perform live in an evening concert organized
by Nicole Gingras in collaboration with Eric Mattson. Jean-Pierre
Gauthier will play musical instruments of his own design,
amplified surface textures, and other sound objects. Dominique
Petitgand will work with sound in accordance to various temporal
references: breath, the voice and its silences, and music
diffused in the darkness. Artist and turntablist Martin Tétreault
will present a work on Ringo Starr, featuring a mix of drum
solos on vinyl with the participation of drummer Pierre Tanguay.
3 SOLOS takes place at the Lion d’Or located at 1676
Ontario St. East, on Wednesday March 2, beginning at 8:30
pm (doors open at 7:30 pm). Admission is $10.
The Leonard & Bina Ellen Art Gallery gratefully acknowledges
the assistance of The Canada Council for the Arts and wishes
to thank the Consulat général de France à
